A High Street house is so badly overrun by 'hundreds of rats' that you can even "see them licking the windows".

Villagers in sleepy Metheringham in Lincolnshire are up in arms over the state of the house which has a number of broken windows as well as heaps of rubbish dumped outside.

Residents say they continue to wait for action despite their numerous complaints – with one neighbour even claiming the stress of the situation led her to have a mental breakdown.

The woman, who didn’t want to be named, told Lincolnshire Live : “It has long been a problem.

“I have struggled for years, as every day you can see the rats licking the condensation off the windows - there must be hundreds of them."

But she says people have even complained to her about it.

“I have been harassed in the street by people saying get rid of the house," she said.

"I had to put an article in the local newsletter saying it wasn’t my house.

"I had a mental and physical breakdown because of the stress - I can’t cope with it any more."

She revealed she had been in contact with North Kesteven District Council (NKDC).

“The council have been out and I have told them I have found rat droppings in my garden and the house is full of so much stuff you can’t even see in," she added.

“I think it’s a health hazard - not to mention a fire risk.

“It is overrun with rats. It’s a major concern in the village.”

Another neighbour, who also didn’t want to be named, said it isn’t just affecting those living nearby.

“The lollipop lady told me kids are screaming when they walk past on their way to school,” she said.

“It is appalling. It’s dreadful and disgusting to think that rats are in and around my home."

She added: “It is a beautiful building and could be a lovely home, but it is being ruined."

Another said: "You can't miss it. There are rats in the window - it looks like they are trying to claw their way out.

"One neighbour even told me they had seen rats eating other rats.

"I saw pest control there yesterday in white suits with a Transit van."

Another even said they found one of the rodents dead on their property.

"I have seen the rats in the window after being noted a few weeks back," they said.

"Last summer, I saw a dead rat in my garden."

Another resident said she thought it was 'disgusting'.

"You see them in the windows," she said. "Something should have been done about it a long time ago - it's a health hazard.

"You can hear the school kids going past screaming 'eurgh, look at the rats'."

A recent email sent to some neighbours by the council- which has been seen by Lincolnshire Live - says the house owner has six weeks to remove the vermin from the property.

North Kesteven District Council and the house-owner have been approached for comment.
