Officials: Five hospitalized following chemical spill in Volusia County
Five people were taken to the hospital after being exposed to a chemical substance at the West Volusia Solid Waste Transfer Station in DeLand.Officials say the substance, since determined to be a mixture of household chemicals, got dumped onto the tipping floor and mixed into the transfer truck trailer.The truck was authorized by Hazmat to be pulled from a building and stored outside.Five people, including four transfer station employees and a customer, were hospitalized. Officials say those involved complained of respiratory issues and eye and throat irritation. Solid Waste's hazardous waste cleanup contract will go to the Transfer Station Wednesday to remove contaminated waste and clean the trailer.
