Tamil Nadu Man Arrested With Rs 112 Crore Worth Heroin On Delhi-bound Train In Bengaluru

In a major drug bust, the Bengaluru unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) recovered 16 kgs of heroin which is estimated to be worth Rs 112 crore in the international market from a train passenger.

The accused said to be a native of Tamil Nadu was on his way to Delhi on a train from KSR Bengaluru City railway station when he was caught.

The accused came from Ethiopia 

The 35-year-old had landed at Bengaluru airport on Monday morning on a flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia after a one-week business trip.

He was carrying the heroin in custom-built false cavities of his two suitcases.

The false cavities were so well concealed that he managed to evade the screening at two airports.

Caught based on specific inputs 

The DRI intercepted him while he was on the train that was about to leave for New Delhi based on specific inputs that a large quantity of heroin is being smuggled on a train.

The accused has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for substance smuggling and was sent to Central Prison.

"This person had arrived in Bengaluru by the morning flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and was on his way to New Delhi, when he was intercepted. The said person has been arrested and further investigations are underway," a DRI statement said.

This is said to be one of the biggest seizures of contraband by the Bengaluru unit of DRI has made so far.

703 kg MD seized in Mumbai

In a related incident, five drug peddlers were arrested on Thursday and a consignment of 703 kilograms of MD drugs was seized in Nalasopara town in Mumbai's Palghar.

"Anti Narcotics Cell of Mumbai Police seized 703 kg of MD drug from Nalasopara area. Five drug peddlers were arrested," said Datta Nalawade, DCP Anti-Narcotics Cell.

"The seized drug consignment is worth around Rs 1400 crores," the DCP added.

Accordign to the authorities, the mastermind Pravin Kumar, used to manufacture the contraband at drugs manufacturing units in Palghar and Ambernath and was sold using social media platforms and also to fixed clients.

According to the Police, Kumar, a native of Uttar Pradesh, is a postgraduate in organic chemistry from Purvanchal University.

After working as an executive for a pharma company for years, Kumar started dealing in drugs and later started making mephedrone (MD) himself.

It had become so successful that he even leased a chemical unit in Palghar to manufacture MD.
