UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- Gabon, which holds the presidency of the UN Security Council for the month of October, said Monday that the council's monthly program of work will feature two signature events, namely one on "peace and security in Africa" and another on "climate and security in Africa."

Michel Xavier Biang, permanent representative of Gabon to the United Nations and president of the council, told reporters at a press conference at the UN headquarters in New York that his country plans to hold the first signature event, a debate on "Peace and security in Africa: strengthening the fight against financing of armed groups and terrorists through the illicit trafficking of natural resources" this week on Thursday. Gabon's President Ali Bongo Ondimba is expected to chair the meeting.

The second signature event, according to Biang, is a debate on "Climate and security in Africa." Gabon's Foreign Minister Michael Moussa-Adamo will chair the meeting.

In October, the annual open debate on women, peace and security will take place with a particular focus on "strengthening women's resilience and leadership as a path to peace in regions plagued by armed groups."

The council is also scheduled to hold its annual debate on cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organizations, focusing on the AU.

The 16th annual joint consultative meeting between the Security Council and the AU Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) will be held on Oct. 14. The annual meeting rotates between New York and Addis Ababa, the home of the AU headquarters. This year, the meeting will be held in New York, and it will be preceded by the ninth informal joint seminar of the Security Council and the AUPSC, which is set to take place on Oct. 13.

In addition to the signature events, according to the council president, African issues on the program of work in October include: Western Sahara, consultations on the UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara and the mandate renewal of MINURSO; and Somalia, briefing by the chair of the 751 Somalia Sanctions Committee and the mandate renewal of the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia.

Middle East issues on the program include: Yemen, monthly briefing and consultations on developments; and Syria, meetings on the political/humanitarian situations and on the chemical weapons track.

The council is expected to meet on two European issues in October. Two issues in the Americas will also be discussed in October, including Haiti, a briefing on the UN Integrated Office in Haiti.
