The president Donald Trump has maintained the rhetoric that the United States should take over Greenland, a move that has been rejected by the authorities and citizens of the Danish island. Amidst this controversy, this week the visit of Usha Vance, wife of US Vice President JD Vance, is expected, sparking protests from the Greenlanders, who have popularized a red cap as a symbol of rejection of becoming part of the United States.

In addition to Vance’s wife, who will be accompanied by one of their children, Mike Waltz, Trump’s national security advisor, and Chris Wright, Secretary of Energy, will also be attending.

Island authorities have stated that the United States government has not contacted them for an official visit, but the White House assured that it is a tourist and cultural visit to “celebrate the culture and unity of Greenland.” Among the events that the high-ranking US officials will attend is the Avannaata Qimussersu, which is the national dog sled race.

“What is the security advisor doing in Greenland? The only purpose is to show power,” said the outgoing Prime Minister, Mute Egede, to the newspaper Sermitsiaq, as reported by BBC. According to Jens-Frederik Nielsen, his successor, the visit of Trump’s officials is a lack of respect.

On the other hand, President Trump assured journalists on Monday that “this is kindness, not provocation,” as reported by El Nuevo Herald.

Red hat, a symbol of protest in Greenland to become part of the United States

Buzzfeed reported that a survey revealed that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to be part of the United States, and as a sign of protest, they created their own MAGA hat.

The red cap was designed by Aannguaq Reimer-Johansen, and it says in white letters: “Make America, go away.”

The aforementioned media outlet reported that Reimer-Johansen challenged the Greenlanders to wear the red cap during the visit of Vance’s wife and other senior US officials.

“Challenge to the citizens: Vance’s wife’s visit is an offense. If you take a smiling selfie with them, you send a signal to the world that you love the United States and want to be part of it. We have already shown our attitude through a large demonstration. Let’s stand firm and stay united,” Reimer-Johansen stated.

On social media, many are commenting that they will wear the hat and are praising it as an icon of independence in the United States.
