Expectations were rather low, as the tiny principality had lost twice to another such small team, San Marino, in the UEFA Nations League at the end of last year, eventually finishing bottom of their three-team group.

Ranked 204th in the FIFA world rankings, they may not expect to score many points in the coming months, as Wales and Belgium are also in Group J.

However, a home match against 110th-ranked Kazakhstan perhaps offers the best chance for German coach Konrad Funfstuck to achieve a rare success.

The stadium was officially inaugurated on July 31, 1998 with a match between FC Vaduz, Liechtenstein Cup champion at the time, and Kaiserlautern, Bundesliga champion at the time, in which the German club won 0:8. It is located on the banks of the Rhine River, just a few meters from the Swiss border. The stadium has a capacity of 7838 spectators.[2] The construction of the stadium cost about 19 million Swiss Francs.[3]
