HIGH-SCHOOL

Spring high school sports season in RI is upon us. Here's what you need to know

Providence Journal
  • The spring high school sports season in Rhode Island is days away.
  • The Providence Journal will be previewing the teams and players to keep an eye on this season.
  • Some previews are already published, with more coming in the days ahead

It's the week before spring high school sports start up for real, and if you've missed the season previews by The Providence Journal Sports staff, well, you're forgiven. With all the bracket madness going on, who could blame you?

Fortunately, we've got you covered. This is the place where the season preview content will be collected as we get closer to the first first — fill in the blank with baseball, softball, lacrosse, etc. — games being played.

Boys tennis

Match play for the boys tennis season begins on March 28 and this season should be one of the most competitive we’ve seen in a while for both the teams and the end-of-the-season singles and doubles championships. Realignment has changed the three divisions, going from a 9-14-10 format to 10-10-12.

Here's what you need to know about boys tennis this spring, and the players to keep an eye on.

Girls lacrosse

Elite lacrosse talent is being produced in all four corners of Rhode Island, as communities with strong feeder systems are finding success at the high school level. The big dogs in Division I are back, led by defending champ Moses Brown and runner-up La Salle. Also returning to D-I are Barrington, East Greenwich, Portsmouth and Prout, with D-II champ Chariho and D-II runner-up North Kingstown joining the fun against the state’s best teams.

Boys lacrosse

It's almost a forgone conclusion that La Salle will be the last team standing when this boys lacrosse season is finished, but no one will be handing over the championship to the Rams. Five teams return to play in Division I — Barrington, Hendricken, La Salle, Moses Brown and North Kingstown — with Pilgrim, the runner-up in D-II the last two seasons, Cumberland and South Kingstown moving up to play with the best teams in the state.

In the other divisons, questions remain. Will Prout repeat as Div. II champs, despite some big roster losses? And in Div. III, it's a real horse race. Mt. Hope could very well be the favorite this spring, but expect Narragansett and Toll Gate to find their way into the mix, too.

More to come

There's plenty more to come. Watch this space as The Journal rolls out the remaining spring previews — boys volleyball, baseball, softball, track and field, and golf — in the coming days.

Before you know it, the umpire will be yelling, play ball!
