Baltimore County is rolling out the green carpet for Earth Day with an online pre-order sale of compost bins and rain barrels, encouraging residents to embrace sustainable practices like home composting and rainwater reuse.

Compost bins are priced at $55, while rain barrels are available for $65. For those looking to upgrade, new tumbler compost bins are on offer for $75, with all prices including tax.

Orders can be placed at environworld.us/baltimore until Sunday, April 20. The sale is open to everyone, not just Baltimore County residents.

The pickup is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) - Essex Campus, located at 7201 Rossville Boulevard, Lot 7. Customers are urged to bring their purchase receipt.

Officials say the county has recently expanded its composting guidelines to allow certain food scraps in backyard composting. Composting transforms food scraps and yard waste into humus, a nutrient-rich material that enhances soil health and plant growth. It also improves water retention in sandy soils and drainage in clay soils.

Rainwater collection is another eco-friendly practice promoted by the county. Using rain barrels helps reduce water pollution from stormwater runoff and provides chemical-free water for gardens.
