Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is reportedly being lined-up for a shock £90million move to Real Madrid.

Fernandes has been one of United's best players this season and has found his form in recent months. The midfielder has scored 16 goals and assisted a further 16 for Ruben Amorim's men despite the club's on-field struggles.

The 30-year-old signed a new contract in August last year, until 2027, but it's now claimed the Portugal international is being watched by the European champions.

According to the Daily Star, Madrid have sent representatives to 'virtually every' United game recently with Fernandes the subject of their scouting. The club's ongoing financial struggles mean Amorim could face an overhaul of his squad in the summer.

The report adds that Fernandes is being eyed by Madrid as a successor to Luka Modric, 39. The Croatian is out of contract in the summer and the Spanish giants are expected to seek a replacement in the near future.

United's form this season, they sit 13th in the Premier League table, has left them in a position of threat over certain players. Failure to win the Europa League, booking a place in the Champions League, could trigger a fire sale over the summer to raise funds to bring reinforcements in.

Fernandes is United's most-prized asset after five years of quality performances. However, there has been recent talk that the playmaker could seek a new challenge in hope of being successful at club level after regressing at Old Trafford.

The United star recently spoke out on his ambition to overtake Andy Cole and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the club's goalscoring charts whilst also surpassing 300 appearances in red. Fernandes is currently 20th on the all-time scoring list on 95, Cole has 121 and Solskjaer has 126.

"From Sandy Turnbull [101 goals] it's a long way up. 121 for Andy Cole, then 126 for Ole," he said. "I hope to overtake them and it will be a good sign for us as a club that I'm scoring so many goals.

"Hopefully I'm going to go up and up. I hope to score as many as I can to help the club - and also help my team-mates to score more and more."
