A Guam Department of Education leisure education therapist has been recognized nationally for contributions made to the physical and mental health of Guam public school students.

The Society of Health and Physical Education, also known as SHAPE America, is a nationally recognized organization which GDOE said supports professionals and advances “best practices” in health and physical education, physical activity, dance and sport. Each year, it recognizes professionals across the nation that have made a significant impact.

This year, SHAPE presented the 2025 Adaptive Physical Education/Activity Program of the Year Award to GDOE Special Education leisure education therapist Andria Macaraeg.

“Dr. Macaraeg’s dedication and passion for providing leisure education services to students with disabilities embody the core values of our department. This award is not only a testament to Dr. Macaraeg’s hard work but also highlights the impact of the collaborative efforts of our entire Special Education team in creating an inclusive educational environment where every student has the opportunity to thrive,” GDOE Assistant Superintendent of Special Education Thomas Babauta said in a release from GDOE on April 1.

Macaraeg has worked with GDOE’s SPED for five years. She is one of two providers who deliver leisure education to eligible students with special needs, according to GDOE.

“These services are integral in the commitment to providing specially designed instruction that enables students to engage in meaningful, enjoyable and enriching recreational activities that contribute to their overall well-being and quality of life,” GDOE said.

Macaraeg was presented the award in April during the SHAPE America National Convention in Baltimore, Maryland.
