A truck loaded with explosive material has been stolen sparking a Europe-wide police search.

Interpol is understood to have raised the alarm after the theft in Belgium of a trailer loaded with material for bomb production.

A warning has been issued to all European police including Italian intelligence and border control where the initial alert was addressed, according to reports.

The truck stolen from Zedelgem on Saturday is believed to contain 33,500 litres of a chemical substance, but there is limited information on how it was taken.

Spanish, French and Belgium authorities are thought to be amongst other police forces on particular alert, with those in neighbouring countries understood to have instigated strict controls.

It is thought that the thieves could have changed licence plates after the theft in order to leave Belgium or headed to a safe house to unload the material.
